Nigeria Validates National Plan to Tackle Climate Change

Nigeria has officially validated its National Adaptation Plan (NAP), a major step toward strengthening resilience to climate change and attracting local and international funding for adaptation efforts.

The validation took place at a high-level workshop in Abuja, where the Minister of Environment, Mr. Balarabe Lawal, said the plan comes at a critical time as Nigeria pursues a greener economy. He urged stakeholders to contribute to refining the document to ensure effective implementation.

Developed with support from the Green Climate Fund and UNEP, the NAP builds on Nigeria’s National Adaptation Strategy and identifies vulnerable communities through climate risk assessments. It addresses key climate threats such as flooding, drought, desertification, and sea-level rise, which affect food security, health, and infrastructure.

The plan aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution, including a commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 47 percent with international support. Stakeholders from AfDB, UN Women, and the National Council on Climate Change reaffirmed their support, stressing the need for financing, gender inclusion, and strong coordination.

The validated NAP is expected to guide nationwide adaptation efforts and mobilize resources to protect communities from the growing impacts of climate change.
