Africa’s First Renewable Energy College Signals Nigeria’s Shift Towards a Greener Economy

Nigeria has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability and clean energy development with the inauguration of Africa’s first renewable energy college—the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, Osara (BARECKS)—alongside a Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State.

Beyond expanding technical education, the twin projects are expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from fossil fuel dependence to cleaner energy sources by producing the skilled workforce needed to drive renewable energy adoption, reduce carbon emissions and support climate-resilient development.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the institution, located at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, as a world-class facility that would position Nigeria as Africa’s leader in renewable energy capacity development.

According to the President, the country’s greatest challenge has not been a lack of natural resources but the shortage of skilled professionals capable of converting those resources into sustainable economic growth and reliable electricity.

He said the college was established to bridge the critical skills gap in Africa’s energy transition by training technicians, installers, operators and maintenance specialists in renewable energy technologies.

Tinubu noted that the institution was modelled after India’s successful vocational training programme that transformed rural communities through solar engineering, expressing confidence that the initiative would deliver similar benefits across Nigeria.

“If that model can light villages in Rajasthan, it can illuminate communities in Kogi, Ondo, Cross River and across Nigeria,” he said.

The President explained that graduates of the college would earn internationally recognised certifications, equipping them with practical skills to support the growing renewable energy industry both in Nigeria and globally.

He also called on development partners, research institutions and private investors to collaborate with the college in advancing clean energy innovation, research and technology development.

The inauguration comes at a time when Nigeria, like many developing countries, is grappling with the effects of climate change, including rising temperatures, flooding, desertification, biodiversity loss and persistent energy poverty.

Experts believe that strengthening technical capacity in renewable energy is essential for achieving the country’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and reducing dependence on diesel generators and other carbon-intensive energy sources that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant is equally expected to support research into low-carbon fuels, positioning Nigeria to participate in the emerging global hydrogen economy while encouraging cleaner industrial production and sustainable energy solutions.

Governor Ahmed Ododo described the projects as strategic investments in human capital and sustainable development, noting that they would create employment opportunities, attract investment and strengthen Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, said the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy powered by innovation, science and green technology.

According to him, Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy depends on developing skilled professionals in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate technology.

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, disclosed that the institution is equipped with smart classrooms, battery energy laboratories, energy efficiency laboratories and a mini-grid simulation centre designed to provide hands-on training in modern renewable energy systems.

He said the college would serve as a hub for research, innovation and workforce development, producing professionals capable of designing, installing and maintaining clean energy infrastructure across Nigeria and the wider African continent.

The environmental significance of the project extends beyond education. By developing indigenous expertise in solar power, battery storage, green hydrogen and energy efficiency, the college is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels, expand access to clean electricity in underserved communities and support the country’s net-zero aspirations.

As Nigeria seeks sustainable solutions to energy shortages, climate change and unemployment, investments in renewable energy education represent more than academic expansion. They lay the foundation for a greener economy, improved environmental stewardship and a workforce equipped to lead Africa’s clean energy transition.

The inauguration of BARECKS is therefore not merely the opening of another tertiary institution; it is a strategic investment in environmental sustainability, climate resilience and the future of Nigeria’s green economy.
