Lagos State has taken a significant step towards advancing sustainable development and climate resilience by formally joining the Under2 Coalition, the world’s largest alliance of states and regions committed to achieving net-zero emissions and building climate-resilient economies. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the London Climate Action Week 2026, reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to global climate leadership and aligns closely with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Vision 2030.
The significance of Lagos State’s admission into the Coalition extends beyond environmental sustainability. It directly supports several key SDGs, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) by strengthening the state’s capacity to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change impacts, and build resilience against environmental risks such as flooding, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events.
The partnership also advances SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting sustainable urban development strategies that enhance infrastructure resilience, improve environmental governance, and create safer and more livable communities for Lagos residents. As one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities, Lagos has an important role to play in demonstrating how urban centres can balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, Lagos State’s focus on investment-ready climate projects and innovative climate financing mechanisms contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by attracting green investments, supporting clean technologies, creating sustainable jobs, and fostering innovation in climate-smart development.
The State’s active engagement with global partners through the Under2 Coalition also advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Membership provides opportunities for knowledge exchange, technical cooperation, capacity building, and access to international best practices, enabling Lagos to accelerate implementation of its climate agenda while contributing to global efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
Through initiatives such as its State-Determined Contributions (SDCs) framework and broader climate governance reforms, Lagos is positioning itself as a leading example of subnational climate action in Africa. The Coalition membership enhances the state’s ability to mobilize resources, strengthen resilience, and implement sustainable solutions that deliver long-term social, economic, and environmental benefits.
The implications of this milestone are far-reaching. By integrating climate action into economic planning and development strategies, Lagos State demonstrates that environmental sustainability and economic prosperity are mutually reinforcing objectives. This approach supports the broader vision of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, ensuring that development today does not compromise the well-being of future generations.
As Lagos strengthens its collaboration with more than 180 states and regions worldwide, its participation in the Under2 Coalition represents not only a commitment to achieving a low-carbon future but also a strategic contribution to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development for all.
