TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), has expanded its school recycling and environmental education programme to 14 schools across Lagos, reinforcing efforts to promote climate awareness and responsible waste management among students.
The Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc, Mr. Wilfried Konde, announced the expansion on Monday during activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day at Aje Community Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in Yaba.
According to Konde, the initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action and builds on an existing programme that previously covered 10 schools located around the company’s facilities in Apapa, Surulere and Victoria Island.
He explained that the latest phase extends the programme to four additional schools through the donation of recycling bins, environmental education and an inter-school clean-up challenge.
Konde said about 500 students have so far benefited from the initiative through climate awareness campaigns, recycling activities and environmental sanitation programmes.
He noted that recyclable materials are collected twice each school term under the supervision of environmental club coordinators and district environmental officers, adding that participating schools gathered a total of 12,596 kilogrammes of recyclable waste between December 2024 and June 2026.
“Today, with the support of our employees and station staff in Yaba and Apapa, we are extending the initiative to four additional schools through recycling bin donations and an inter-school clean-up challenge,” he said.
He encouraged young people to embrace environmentally sustainable practices and contribute to creating cleaner and healthier communities.
Also speaking, the General Manager, Country Services, TotalEnergies Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Adesua Adewole, said environmental sustainability remains a key pillar of the company’s operations.
She noted that TotalEnergies has consistently commemorated World Environment Day through initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals and promote environmental stewardship.
Adewole said the company, which is celebrating 70 years of operations in Nigeria, has maintained its commitment to environmental protection since commencing business in 1956.
She recalled that the company’s first service station, Herbert Macaulay Station, is located close to the host school, making the intervention particularly significant.
According to her, the programme is designed to educate students on the Sustainable Development Goals while encouraging proper waste management through the provision of recycling bins and practical environmental education delivered by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.
“By educating children early, we are helping to raise a generation that will build a more sustainable future,” she said.
She added that the expansion increases the number of participating schools from 10 to 14, including schools located around the Herbert Macaulay service station and the company’s depot on Burma Road, Apapa.
Earlier, the Principal of Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, Mrs. Caroline Awofeso, commended TotalEnergies for supporting environmental education, describing the donation as a valuable contribution to improving the school’s learning environment.
She assured the company that the recycling bins would be properly maintained and effectively utilised.
The event featured environmental awareness sessions and the presentation of recycling bins to the beneficiary schools.
