Spiro Targets Sustainable Mobility Expansion in Nigeria

*New MD prioritises battery-swapping stations, local assembly and green job creation

Spiro plans to expand its electric motorcycle operations in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States as it steps up efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce reliance on petrol-powered motorcycles.

The company’s newly introduced Country Head and Managing Director, Mr Prasad Sane, announced the plans at Spiro’s second Media Connect event in Lagos. He said the company would focus on expanding battery-swapping infrastructure, strengthening partnerships and scaling local assembly to make electric mobility more accessible.

Sane said Spiro aims to build a complete electric mobility ecosystem around its “Energy on the Move” promise.

Battery swapping supports cleaner transport

Spiro plans to expand its battery-swapping stations and service centres across its priority markets.

The technology allows riders to replace depleted batteries in under a minute. This reduces downtime and helps riders avoid petrol costs and lengthy charging stops.

Electric motorcycles produce no tailpipe emissions during operation. Their overall environmental benefits also depend on electricity sources and responsible battery management.

Spiro also plans to strengthen partnerships with financial institutions, logistics companies and rider communities. These partnerships could improve access to electric motorcycles and Battery-as-a-Service solutions.

Local assembly to create jobs

The company plans to scale local assembly, technical training and after-sales support. These investments aim to create jobs, particularly for Nigerian youths and women, while developing local expertise in electric mobility.

At the event, Spiro unveiled its Ekon M1 Version 3 and showcased its products and operations.

The company’s expansion strategy combines cleaner transportation with economic opportunities. Its long-term sustainability impact will depend on wider adoption, reliable battery-swapping infrastructure and responsible battery disposal and recycling.
